Whether your outdoor trip is spontaneous, this multi-functional device adapts to your cravings and also satisfies your heating requirementsIn the blink of an eye, the mobile all-round equipment is ready for use and opens up all possibilities for your adventure.

What is the Atago and what does it do?
The Petromax Atago is a true all-rounder among outdoor cooking places. Whether for succulent steaks, savoury stew, casseroles, pizza or just a hot beverage from the fire: The Atago is a versatile companion for all your cooking adventures leaving no wishes unfulfilled.
Cooking: The Atago can be combined with various pots and pans, so you will be facing no limits at cooking. Smaller pots can be placed inside the Atago. The Dutch Ovens ft6 and ft9 fit perfectly into the Atago. Larger pots and pans can be placed on the top edge or on the grilling grate.
Oven: Using the correct number of briquettes underneath the Dutch Oven and on top of the lid, you can prepare dishes needing top and bottom heat. Thus, casseroles, bread or pizza will be easy successes. Alternatively, you may use the Convention Lid (sold separately).
Grilling: The Grilling Grate provided enables grilling of steaks, fish or vegetables on a space of 34 cm in diameter.
Fire bowl: The cleverly structured Atago also provides for low-smoke combustion at any time when used as a fire bowl. Thus, the Atago also becomes a mobile fireplace apart from being a flexible cooking station.
Plancha Griddle Plate with mini Grilling Grate and Cooking Stand: The Atago Griddle Plate enhances the Atago with a Spanish plancha style steel plate, on which several dishes with different cooking times can be prepared simultaneously. The different temperature zones guarantee the best results and allow, for example, to perfectly grill a steak while grilled vegetables are sizzling on the edge of the plate at the same time. On the Mini Grilling Grate placed in the center of the griddle, you will obtain tasty meat with beautiful grill marks, characteristic of the barbecue. You can also prepare freshly brewed coffee or tea, a hearty side dish, flavorful sauce or a fortifying soup on the Cooking Device , which fits perfectly into the recess of the Atago griddle. Firewood can be safely added by simply removing the Insert and the Cooking Stand with a Petromax Barbecue Tongs .
Thanks to its foldable support legs you can transform it for use or transport and vice versa. With the integrated heat shield on its bottom side, the Atago becomes an efficient and safe cooking and fireplace.
The double-walled construction of the Atago optimally promotes the chimney effect. The continuously adjustable air-supply lever enables temperature regulation. Thus, you can start a fire in no time. Openings for ventilation provide for continuous oxygen supply, rendering the Atago an efficient fire bowl. The sophisticated Atago can be combined with almost all Petromax cast-iron products. Therefore, it is a true power pack with low-smoke combustion, as it can be adapted to any of your adventures.
How do I operate the Atago correctly?
With a short jolt you pull the Atago handle upwards. Due to this motion the three support legs fold out and you have the Atago ready to use. To light the Atago, you spread several cubes of solid fuel on the base inside the Atago. Fully open the air supply and place the Charcoal Grate correctly. Place the desired number of briquettes onto the Charcoal Grate.
Carefully light the solid fuel and let the briquettes burn until they receive the typical white colour. The burning of the charcoal can last up to 30 minutes. Afterwards the Atago is ready for cooking. Due to its structure, the Atago produces strong heat and you need less choal than you might think. For lighting a fire in the fire bowl some tinder of birch bark suffice.
How many coals do I need in the Atago?
The Atago is a highly efficient cooking place storing the heat due to its thought-out structure, and you need little charcoal for cooking. If you like to generate 180 °C bottom heat for a Dutch Oven ft6 you normally need 8 coals (with Petromax Cabix Plus briquettes) and when used in an Atago you only need about 6 coals. The number of coals is defined by size of pot, type of coal and temperature scale. As rule of thumb, you need 30 % less charcoal when using your Dutch Oven inside the Atago. In our table on temperature, you can gain a precise overview.
How do I best store the Atago?
Stainless steel is a particularly pure material. Nevertheless, stainless steel needs a dry place to be stored, as well as avoiding high humidity or salty air. If you leave your Atago unprotected outdoors, there will be unwelcome effects, especially if any ash residues are still inside. These in combination with moisture can lead to a chemical reaction that causes rust. Also, combined storage with other types of steel is not advisable. Therefore, after cleaning, stow your Atago separately in a dry place, ideally inside the matching Transport Bag.
How do I clean the Atago properly?
The Petromax Atago is a reliable long-term companion for your outdoor adventures. Proper care and storage are crucial to the durability of your mobile outdoor cooking equipment. This is how you proceed with the Atago as soon as the cooking process is finished:
Before you start cleaning all fuel, as well as the device itself, it must be completely cold. Therefore, make sure the Atago has cooled down entirely.
- Grasp the opposing sides of the outer cylinder with both hands. Slowly pull up the outer cylinder to retract the inner cylinder and the support legs.
- Dispose of the ashes correctly and sweep the residues with a hand brush.
- After coarse ash residues have been disposed of, remove the fine dust with a damp cloth. Afterwards dry the cleaned Atago with a cloth completely. For special treatment you can use the Bio Cleaner for Soot and Fire Traces to renew the stainless-steel surface of the Atago. Do not, however, use any sharp objects or aggressive cleaning agents.
- The grates can be cleaned with a customary available brass brush (no steel bristles)
- After cleaning, ideally stow the Atago at a dry place inside the matching ripstop Transport Bag.
Tip: Due to manufacturing the Atago has some sharp edges at places. Therefore, we recommend the use of protective gloves during cleaning.
Which coal is best for the Atago?
You can operate the Atago with commercially available charcoal. For a more efficient use of fuel, Petromax Cabix Plus has been developed. They are strongly compressed and have a wavy surface structure to enable free air circulation around the charcoal briquette.
That way, you need less coal to reach the desired temperature compared to conventional charcoal and thus have a more economical coal consumption. In our table of temperature, you find out more about the exact distribution of coal. For use in the Atago you, once again, you need about 30 % less coal.
Can the Atago corrode?
The Atago is made of stainless steel. Due to the high purity of the material this steel group is described as non-corrosive. However, the indication that stainless steel cannot rust does not correspond with the truth. Especially non or insufficient care and wrong storage are the main reasons of rust formation. Moisture and ash lead to an acidic lye that causes rust. Also, storage near other types or already rusty steel can become a factor for rust. In some cases, even saltry air is responsible for corrosion. Thus, it is even more important to know how to avoid corrosion on your Atago.
To make sure that you can enjoy your allrounder for a long time it is important to clean it and stow it clean and dry after every use. Remove all ash residues carefully and do not leave your Atago uncovered outdoors. If you wipe your Atago with a damp cloth, please dry carefully afterwards. Ideally, stow the Atago inside the matching Transport Bag at a dry place. This way, it will be protected permanently.
Is the Atago better suited for a Dutch Oven with legs or for one without legs?
If you already cooked with a Dutch Oven on charcoal, you know that the Dutch Oven with legs is suited for this method very well. The legs provide the perfect distance to the charcoal or embers and the pot stands tilt-proof. When cooking with the Atago, you can choose: If you want to place smaller Dutch Ovens (ft0.5 -ft4.5) on the charcoal inside the Atago, we recommend the version with legs. Larger pots and pans can be placed on the Grilling Grate or on the Cooking Support, which can be acquired separately.
Handling Dutch Ovens without legs is somewhat easier . You may also place smaller pots on the Grilling Grate to cook easily with somewhat more distance to the charcoal. The Dutch Ovens ft6 and ft9 fit perfectly into the Atago, both with and without legs. Therefore, you do not need a special kind of pot for the Atago, as it can be easily combined with all Petromax cast-iron products.
Which Dutch Oven fits into the Atago?
All Dutch Ovens from ft0.5 to ft9 can be placed inside the Atago. Up to the Dutch Oven size ft4.5 there is sufficient room towards the edge of the Atago. The Dutch Ovens ft6 and ft9 fit completely flush into the Atago. With these two Dutch Oven sizes, heat developement ist especially effective.
However, while cooking, please make sure that air supply is fully open at all times. That way charcoal briquettes will receive sufficient oxygen for glowing. Push the handle rightwards and only then place the ft6 or ft9 inside the Atago.
Which Petromax Pans are ideal for the Atago?
The ideal pan for the Atago has a diameter of at least 30 cm. The Petromax Fire Skillets and Grill Fire Skillets in the appropriate size are ideally suited to be combined with the Atago even without the Grilling Grate.
Smaller or larger Skillets or Wrought-Iron Pans can be easily used on the Grilling Grate or on the Cooking Support, which can be acquired seperately. The Poffertjes Pan can be easily placed on the top edge of the Atago. If you own a Dutch Oven in the size ft6 or ft9 you can place the upside-down lid on the edge of the Atago and also use it as a pan.
Apart from the classic pans, special forms such as the Poultry Roaster, Ring Cake Pan, Potato Cooker or Muffin Tin ease preparation of savoury or sweet dishes. These can be easily placed on top of the Charcoal Grate. Combined with the Convection Lid you profit from the all-round heat.
How strong is downward heat development?
Even though the heat development is especially efficient and high temperatures are created inside the inner cylinder, the ground below remains well protected due to insulation. However, you should always keep in mind that the Atago is a fireplace, which is the reason why general safety conditions need to be observed.
Place the Atago on a fireproof surface and keep sufficient distance to flammable objects. However, downward heat development is very low, therefore, the Atago can be easily operated on a table. The support legs are very sharp-edged in some parts. Therefore, the table is ideally to be protected with a scratch-resistant cover.
Can the Atago be stored together with the Dutch Oven inside the Transport Bag?
Your Atago consists of pure stainless-steel, which if cared for correctly is much more resistant against rust than other types of steel. Cast-iron, however, consist of iron alloys. This is also a robust material which, if cared for correctly, can last a lifetime.
Still, in the long run, if stored together, the different materials would react with each other and cause rust. In addition, the weight of the Dutch Oven would become a heyv load for the folded Atago, if it were to be stored in it permanently. Store each of these fantastic products separately to enjoy them for a long time.
