Which Fire Bowl is the best?
Individual criteria are crucial for choosing the right Fire Bowl for your needs. What really matters is the quality. After all, you will want to enjoy your Fire Bowl for as many years as possible.
Robust steel like with the Petromax Griddle and Fire Bowls is insensitive to high temperatures. What matters is the strength of the steel used. Steel, which is particularly durable, is a material that is ideally suited for Fire Bowls. Our steel Fire Bowls are made in Germany.
Stainless steel, like the Petromax Atago, is particularly resistant to rust and remains visually appealing for a long time. The combination of ash and water, however, does lead to a reaction that can cause rust, so it is important to remove all ash residues from the Atago after it has cooled down. After use, please store it in a dry place.
In fact, the material is not the only thing that matters. The size of the Fire Bowl is crucial too. The fire bowl should be positioned so that it has a sufficient distance from any heat-sensitive material, so you should choose a size that is in line with your usable space for the Fire Bowl. A good Fire Bowl also ensures a safe distance from the ground: The Atago has an integrated heat shield that insulates against the ground, whereas the Griddle and Fire Bowl features legs that provide sufficient distance to the ground.
What makes a Fire Bowl perfect is not only the fulfilment of the basic requirements in terms of material and size but also of your personal requirements. The following accessories are ideal for your outdoor adventures: We offer a matching transport bag for all portable fireplaces.

How much is a Fire Bowl?
The costs of Fire Bowls vary widely and depend on material composition, design and additional features as well as its size. Petromax Griddle and Fire Bowls are available in three sizes; they can be stacked on top of each other so that the lower Fire Bowl can heat up the one above. This way you can use the grilling plate when an open fireplace is not an option. The smallest of the German-made Griddle and Fire Bowls has a diameter of 38 cm and costs €79.99.
The Petromax Atago 3-in-1 is a multi-talent with low-smoke combustion and all-round features and winner of the bronze medal of the International Barbecue Awards for innovative achievements in the barbecue category. It can be combined with almost all Petromax Dutch Ovens, Grill Fire Skillets, Wrought Iron Pans, special forms and can even be combined with the Petromax Convection Lid. The versatile Fire Bowl, cooking and grilling station costs €239.99.
How big should a Fire Bowl be?
Unlike a fixed fireplace, a Fire Bowl can be set up in different places, always making sure, of course, that a sufficient distance from bushes, trees or shrubs is maintained. This is an important consideration when choosing the right size.
Another one is the intended use. If you want to surprise your family with a barbecue on the Griddle and Fire Bowl, you should plan enough space for it. You should also pay attention to the different heat zones on the plate. Those allow you to grill with pinpoint accuracy: In the centre you have direct heat, on the outer zones you can roast gently.
Regarding the pack size: All Petromax Griddle and Fire Bowl have a height of approx. 5 cm, regardless of the diameter. This way you can stow it away in narrow spaces. A Fire Bowl should always be large enough to allow you to realise your plans but at the same time please consider the possible limitation of your environment.
Can you have a barbecue with a Fire Bowl?
Both, the Petromax Atago and the Griddle and Fire Bowl are excellent choices for barbecue enthusiasts, since both Fire Bowls let you grill on them. With the Griddle and Fire Bowl, you barbecue on a grilling plate whereas with the Atago, you put your food on the supplied grilling grate over charcoal or a wood fire. Thanks to their compact transport dimension, this means you have two Fire Bowls that can accompany you on every barbecue adventure.

How do I season a Griddle and Fire Bowl?
For using the Petromax Griddle and Fire Bowl as a grilling plate, you should first season it. This is the first step towards the formation of a natural patina layer. It will prevent your food from sticking to the plate and is therefore essential for successful grilling and roasting results on your Griddle and Fire Bowl.
In a first step, put high-heat vegetable fat or cooking oil in your Griddle and Fire Bowl. When hot enough, add a generous amount of salt to the oil. This keeps the oil on the outer area even with the curved shape of the Fire Bowl. Stirring occasionally, distribute the oil-salt mixture over the entire surface. Once the frying surface of your Fire Bowl turns dark in places or over a large area, the typical patina forms. You can empty the Bowl, let it cool down and carefully remove the residue with hot water.
After you have dried it thoroughly, rub it with the high-heat oil or the Petromax Care Conditioner for Cast and Wrought Iron. Your Griddle and Fire Bowl is now ready for its first use.
You will find a detailed description of the seasoning process in the manual or in our post on seasoning Wrought Iron and Fire Bowls.
What to choose, a Fire Basket or a Fire Bowl?
The terms Fire Basket and Fire Bowl are sometimes difficult to distinguish. Basically, on the one hand, a Fire Basket is a vase-shaped structure made of lattice bars. The open sides ensure a constant supply of oxygen which provides for a particularly high flame pattern.
A Fire Bowl, on the other hand, mainly has a closed body and can be shaped like a plate, bowl or even a fountain. In the meantime, the boundaries have become blurred and many Fire Bowls have air holes for better burning. In principle, the fire in a Fire Bowl is easier to handle and control due to its enclosure, especially if you need to consider the distance to neighbours or surrounding bushes and shrubs.
The risk of sparks or small logs falling out is also lower with a Fire Bowl compared to a Fire Basket. With the Petromax Griddle and Fire Bowl and the Petromax Atago, you can fully enjoy the fire whilst at the same time ensuring that the ash is safely collected.
