Perfectly dressed in natural, sustainable and cruelty-free materials suitable for all temperatures: Petromax Loden – made in Germany. The plastic-free fabric is processed into outdoor clothing that is particularly suitable for your outdoor adventures around the campfire.

What is Loden?
Loden is a traditional and natural material. Intricately made from new sheep's wool, which is spun, woven and then milled, it is probably the most robust of all sustainable outdoor fabrics
Loden has been known since the 12th century, but for a long time it was used almost exclusively for traditional clothing and hunting clothing. Especially in recent years, the material has received increasing attention. This should come as no surprise, given the properties of this sustainable wool fabric: Made without mineral oils, no release of microplastics during care, low-noise movement in nature and spark resistance are among the most important advantages. Due to the hollow structure of the wool fibres, Loden has a very good temperature balancing effect and does not absorb odours.
With the Petromax Loden series, you also benefit from the guiding principle of the German dragon brand, which applies to all Petromax products: combining tradition and quality for the best possible quality. Functional styles and details guarantee that your future Loden companion will meet your demands for modern active wear.
How is Loden made?
For centuries, clothing made from milled wool has reliably protected people during outdoor exertions all year round. Petromax Loden fabric is made in Germany and consists of 100% new wool – completely natural and without additives. In several elaborate steps, the wool is first spun, then woven and finally milled.
In the process, the Loden is tamped down in water to such an extent that a high degree of compression takes place under the pressure. Petromax Loden offers you many advantages: Due to its extremely strong fabric it is naturally spark-resistant, wind and water-repellent, warming and at the same time noiseless, breathable and supports the body's own temperature regulation. This means you will not sweat too quickly outdoors, even during strenuous expeditions, hiking trips or during cooking endevours.
What is mulesing-free Loden?
Mulesing is a practice that is highly controversial among experts. It involves removing excess skin from the hindquarters of lambs without anaesthesia. This painful procedure is carried out by many farmers to protect the sheep from annoying fly infestations.
Although this is the most profitable method for farmers, as after the healing process the disfigured areas become scarred and no longer attract flies, the procedure leads to great (permanent) pain for the animals.
As a responsible traditional brand, we see it as our duty to check the origin of the materials used and to ensure that livestock farming is carried out in a species-appropriate manner. This includes the renunciation of the mulesing procedure.
Therefore, all Petromax Jackets and Coats made from 100% Loden are guaranteed mulesing-free.

How waterproof is Loden?
The water resistance of a garment is usually indicated by the water column. It is based on the pressure at which a textile allows water to pass through. The higher the indicated value, the more water-resistant the garment.
There is a difference with Loden: Since Loden is a natural material made of 100% new sheep's wool and therefore without artificial additives, there is no indication of the water column. However, there are still indicators that give you an idea about how waterproof Loden is. Loden contains natural wool greases – also known as lanolin. These wool greases are the true strength of the natural material as lanolin has a water and dirt-repelling effect. Loden is no substitute for a rain jacket, so you should wear extra rain protection, especially in heavy showers.
However, Loden clothing can absorb up to a third of its own weight in moisture without feeling wet – a remarkable feat that works in a completely natural way. Whether Deubelskerl, Bergmaid or Waldmack: Petromax Loden is a water-repellent material. Loden is also resistant to flying sparks and wind.

Is Loden warm?
The basic material of Petromax Loden is new sheep's wool, which is particularly comfortable to wear due to its ruffled structure and fine fibres.
It is breathable and thus has a temperature-balancing effect: In summer it dissipates excess body heat, in winter it keeps it on the body. These outstanding properties are retained even after the milling process.
So, if you own a Bergmaid, Deubelskerl or similar product, you are well equipped even when temperatures outside vary. If you are looking for a particularly warm jacket for winter, we recommend that you choose a somewhat thicker Loden, because the higher the grammage per meter, the warmer your Petromax Loden will keep you.
The Waldmack Loden Anorak has a material thickness of 700 g / rm. Thanks to its bell shape, it is the warmest of all Petromax Loden Jackets and Coats.
Can Loden be ironed?
Since Loden is a very high-quality material, proud Loden owners want to do everything right when it comes to taking care of the fabric. The question of whether Loden can be ironed is therefore justified. By carefully ironing your Loden at regular intervals, you maintain the resilience of your garment by smoothing out the raised wool fibres, redensifying the fabric surface and strengthening its natural resistance against water and wind. You are doing your garment a favour by ironing it every now and then. You should set your iron to medium and apply only moderate pressure. Use ironing paper on areas with the dragon embroidery.
Can Loden be washed?
Petromax Loden made from 100% new wool is easy to care. Where everyday clothing needs to be washed after a short time, Loden clothing needs much less attention. The material hardly absorbs odours and also proves to be very insensitive to stains and sparks. A simple airing outdoors is usually sufficient to get rid of the campfire smell from the night before.
Nor does superficial soiling, such as mud or spilled drinks, require the fabric to be washed. Accidentally spilled coffee, for example, can be quickly cleaned up with a damp, absorbent cloth. After drying, coarse encrustations can easily be removed with a soft clothes brush (e.g. made of horsehair). Normally, that's all that is needed to start a new adventure with your Loden jacket.
However, certain stains do require a wash. The Bio Hand Wash Detergent for Petromax Loden was developed exclusively for this purpose. Thanks to the special enzyme active formula, it penetrates deep into the garment structure and effectively removes heavy soiling and odours. Vegetable or animal fats and proteins are gently dissolved and your traditional fabric remains durable.

How to wash and care for Loden properly:
- The Bio Hand Wash Detergent is a concentrate. It should be diluted with water in a ratio of 1:25. Please follow the instructions to achieve the best possible cleaning result. For example, add 400 ml of Hand Wash Detergent to 10 l of water.
- Take a washing bucket, a tub or use your bathtub to prepare an appropriate bath with the diluted detergent. The temperature of the water should be lukewarm and should never exceed 30 °C.
- Place your Loden garment in the bath and press it down several times. Make sure it is completely soaked with water. Now let it soak for two hours.
- Drain the water and rinse your Loden generously and thoroughly with clean water. Again, the water temperature should not exceed 30 °C.
- After rinsing, you can gently squeeze your Loden garment. Please NEVER wring, otherwise your Deubelskerl or the like will lose its shape.
- Extra tip for faster drying: Lay your washed and rinsed Loden flat on a dry towel and loosely roll it up. Now you can lightly press a few times, thereby removing a lot of the water from the wool fibres and shortening the subsequent drying time.
- The Loden must then dry gently. This is very important because it is the only way to keep its shape. Lay it out flat, e. g. on a drying rack and make sure there is enough fresh air. After drying, your Loden clothing is ready to use again.
- If you do not want to wash your Loden yourself, you can take it to a dry cleaner.
- If you have had to wash your Petromax outdoor clothing several times, you will have lost valuable wool greases in the process. These protect you from any weather and retain the warmth. You should therefore do your Loden a favour by ensuring that it is re-greased. Wool grease (lanolin) is available in various forms and can be applied to the outer surface of your Loden. However, be sure to look for a natural composition and follow the manufacturer's instructions and label information of the respective product.
