What is a Rocket Stove and how does it work?

The Rocket Stove is one of the Petromax Outdoor Stoves and, at just 33 cm high, provides concentrated firepower. This handy, portable cooker and fireplace quickly heats up your outdoor cookware. It is the ideal companion on camping trips due to its efficient combustion and because it is easy to fuel with collected twigs, branches or bark.

The L-shaped design of the combustion chamber forms the functional core. This creates a chimney effect, rendering the Rocket Stove an efficient cooking place. Cold air entering the combustion chamber is heated and becomes less dense as the temperature increases, so that the air automatically rises and can escape through the vertical opening. The vacuum that is created ensures that air is constantly drawn in and emitted. As a result, the Rocket Stove achieves effective combustion even with only little fuel, and you benefit from powerful heat that builds up fast.

The combustion chamber receives a continuous supply of oxygen through the air openings on the outside of the base, keeping the flames blazing. The grate with its ash dish underneath also promotes oxygen supply. Combustion residues fall through the grate into the ash box to create space for more fuel.

What can I do with a Rocket Stove?

The Rocket Stove is a portable cooker that does not require electricity. You can use it to prepare food as well as hot drinks. Cook a savoury breakfast of bacon and egg in the Wrought-Iron Pan in no time. Due to the Rocket Stove’s high temperatures, the pan will heat up quickly and deliver crisp roasting results. A seared steak or fried potatoes cook particularly well. The Rocket Stove and the Wrought-Iron Pan are the perfect team.

It is also easy to cook stews. The cast-iron contact surface heats up pots and pans effectively. From a bottom diameter of 12 cm, you can also use your Dutch Oven (without legs) to cook conveniently on the Rocket Stove. The bigger the pot, however, the further it protrudes over the 23.5 cm contact surface. The Rocket Stove is not suitable for braising and cooking for long periods of time due to its tremendous power and consistently high heat. The Petromax Percolator is ideal for preparing aromatic tea or coffee on the Rocket Stove. With its high flame power, the Rocket Stove is quick at warming up and roasting food as well as boiling water.

Which pots and pans are best for the Rocket Stove?

The Rocket Stove is made for quick operation. Thanks to the chimney effect, it generates very powerful and concentrated heat. That is why cookware such as the Wrought-Iron Pan is ideal to cook with.

However, the Rocket Stove is also perfect for cooking or heating up a savoury stew in a cast-iron Dutch Oven or baked beans, fried potatoes and other pan-fried dishes in a Fire Skillet or Wrought-Iron Pan. You can prepare reviving hot drinks such as tea and coffee on the Rocket Stove using the Petromax Percolators.

Which size of Dutch Oven is suitable for the Rocket Stove?

The Rocket Stove has a space-saving contact surface made of cast iron. Because cast iron distributes heat in the optimum way, the Rocket Stove will accommodate even larger Dutch Ovens or pans. The bigger the cookware, however, the more it protrudes over the sides. Please, therefore, always ensure that the Rocket Stove is positioned on an even surface so that it is tilt-proof and keep out of reach of children and animals.

The ft3 to ft9 Dutch Ovens and pans up to 30 cm in diameter are the optimum size. However, even an ft12 or a 40 cm pan can be heated up properly; it just takes a little longer to have the temperature spread evenly. Here it is essential to find a tilt-proof position and to place the cookware centrally. Due to the concentrated heating, we recommend that you stirr your food regularly!

What are the benefits of a Rocket Stove?

The insulated oven casing has a double wall which is why the Petromax Rocket Stove is so durable. You can readily use Dutch Ovens and cast- and wrought-iron Petromax Pans for cooking and roasting (note: minimum bottom diameter of 12 cm).

When out in the countryside in particular, the Rocket Stove is a compact cooking place that is ready for use in no time. Thanks to the design and the chimney effect, it reaches high temperatures in just a few minutes and maximises the use of fuel.

Due to the continual air flow it burns so efficiently that little ash residues are produced. In addition, the cast-iron top piece is a trump card because, just as the cast-iron Dutch Ovens, it stores and distributes heat evenly and transfers it to the cookware. Thus, you will achieve even cooking and roasting results in a way that saves energy.

Which fuel can I use in the Rocket Stove?

The Rocket Stove is exceptionally efficient and can be fueled with small branches, twigs or fir cones. Small pieces of firewood also make suitable fuel. Coals should not be used, however. Just use wood you have gathered, and you will even save on cost!

Back to homepage

How to light the Rocket Stove best?

To light the Rocket Stove, first position the fuel support on the ash box and fully open the feeding door to the combustion chamber. Then place the Petromax Fire Kit or build a small pyramid fire made of twigs and branches in the centre of the combustion chamber and light it.

Now all you need to do is insert even smaller twigs from the top and the Rocket Stove will be doing its job. After this you can add branches, twigs or small pieces of split wood via the fuel support. By opening and closing you regulate the air supply.

Back to homepage

How do I clean the Rocket Stove?

For cleaning purposes, remove the ash dish from the Rocket Stove when it is cold and empty it. To remove all ash residues from the Rocket Stove, you can shake it out briefly and clean the combustion chamber and chimney with a hand brush.

You can wipe the body and the cast-iron top piece with a damp cloth but always dry it thoroughly with a dry cloth afterwards to prevent corrosion. For removing stronger soiling on the body, we recommend the Petromax Bio Cleaner for Soot and Fire Traces. For extra protection and care, treat the cast-iron top piece regularly with Petromax Care Conditioner for Cast and Wrought Iron.

Bio Cleaner for Soot and Fire Traces (750 mL)
Natural power cleaner against grease and combustion traces The Bio Cleaner for Soot and Fire Traces easily and efficiently removes stubborn soiling from your Petromax outdoor cooking places. Residues can be powerfully removed with the ready-to-use mixture. The Petromax cleaner relies on natural ingredients thus being especially material friendly on your outdoor equipment. The power cleaner is biodegradable and without any artificial fragrances and added colouring. You can easily apply it onto steel, stainless steel, enamelled or powder-coated surfaces and at the same time provide for optimal material conservation. It leaves a protective layer which directly counteracts rust development. This way you complete two maintenance procedures in just one step and support the durability of your fireproof cooking equipment. Easy application with instant effect Not only consists the Bio Cleaner for Soot and Fire Traces of environmentally compatible ingredients, but the bottle with practical spray head is also made from recycled materials. You thus receive pure and natural cleaning power that can be used immediately. To rid your cooking equipment of oil, grease and stubborn traces of use you generously spray the respective spots. Shortly after application you can rinse your grill or cooking utensil with clear water and then wipe with a dry cloth. For strongly soiled spots you can also work in the Bio Cleaner with a soft brush or household sponge. Do not use a metal sponge as it harms the material surface. Rocket Stove or Atago – what is the right cooking place for me?

Both the Rocket Stove and the Atago are ideal outdoor cooking places. The Atago is a grill, fire bowl, stove and oven all in one product. When cooking with a Dutch Oven in or on the Atago, you can conveniently work with top and bottom heat by positioning coals on the charcoal grate as well as on the lid of the Dutch Oven.

Slow cooking and braising are easy with the Atago. The Rocket Stove is your powerful outdoor stove. You can use Percolators, cast-iron pans and Dutch Ovens on it too. The Rocket Stove generates heat very quickly and is best suited for dishes which require good bottom heat.

You can prepare stews, fried potatoes or a quick scrambled egg in a matter of moments. The Rocket Stove is a reliable companion which achieves high temperatures rapidly with only small twigs, branches and pine cones. It is, however, too powerful for slow cooking.
