Find out which version of the HK500 is the right one for you.
What kind of petroleum is suitable for the Petromax Pressure Lamp?
The portable Petromax HK500 petroleum lamp has provided self-sufficient outdoor lighting since it was developed in its original form in 1921. The indestructible High-Pressure Lamp is made to last forever. High quality petroleum can influence the service life of the lamp's wearing parts in a positive manner.
For that reason, we recommend that you use highly purified petroleum or paraffin for the HK500 High-Pressure Lamp. Petromax Alkan is a paraffin perfectly suited for the HK500. It is highly pure and, thanks to its unique composition, combustion is particularly clean and almost odourless.
How do I use a petroleum lamp?
Petroleum lamps are intended for outdoor use. Petroleum provides the lamp with the energy it needs to produce its luminosity. In the case of the HK500, the petroleum is filled into the tank. By means of the hand pump attached to the tank, increase the pressure to 1.5 to 2 bar. Then ignite the fuel flowing out from the Rapid Tilt Lever. Now the lamp is brought up to its operating pressure of 2.5 bar. The lamp will now provide light for many hours. You can find detailed instructions on the lighting process in the user manual.
How does the Petromax High-Pressure Lamp work?
There are various ways in which petroleum lamps work. Normally, a wick is used. Instead of a wick, however, the Petromax High-Pressure Lamp uses a synthetic silk mantle. The petroleum is pumped into a carburettor where it mixes with oxygen. The mixed fuel is ignited and reacts with the mantle, impregnated with luminous salts, and then burns extremely brightly.
